Mobile Generations – 1G to 4G

So you might have seen 3G being advertised everywhere these days, billboards, television advertisements, you name it. But what is 3G? How is it different from what we used previously? What were the previous standards?
Cell Phone networks

Cell phone networks

First of all, these standards are set by the International Telecommunication Union or ITU for short. It is a specialized agency of the United Nations, founded in 1865, which is responsible for information and communication technologies. The ITU co-ordinates the shared global use of the radio spectrum, works to improve telecommunication infrastructure and establishes related worldwide telecommunication standards.
It all started with 1G, the first generation of wireless telephone technology and mobile telecommunications. Introduced sometime in the 1980′s, 1G networks used analog signals, as opposed to digital signals used by all the successive generations of mobile technologies. In 1G network, voice calls were simply modulated to a higher frequency, typically to 150MHz and up. The first commercially available cellular network using 1G standard was introduced by NTT (Nippon Telegraph and Telephone) in 1979 in Japan. NTT is also a shareholder and technology provider for TATA DoCoMo in India.
The second generation, 2G, was commercially launched for the GSM standard in 1991 by Radiolinja, currently known as Elisa Oyj, in Finland. 2G allowed for enhanced data services and also introduced short messaging service (SMS). Since the introduction of 2G, voice communications were digitally encrypted. This allowed for greater privacy, efficient data transfer and also less expensive equipment. Two revisions or additions to this generation are sometimes referred to 2.5G and 2.75G. The combined introduction of GPRS (General Packet Radio Services) and the usage of CDMAone networks collectively came to be known as 2.5G. GPRS provided data transfer rates from 56-115kbit/s. So, services like WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) and MMS (Multimedia Messaging) were introduced, along with Internet services. 2.75G was the name given to the evolution of EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution) or Enhanced GPRS (EGPRS). This was due to the introduction of 8PSK encoding, which facilitated higher data transfer rates of up to 236.8kbits/s, almost triple of the previous rates. This is the most widely used generation of mobile telecommunication networks, and is what most mobile phones in India are now using.
Evolution into 3G

Evolution of networks into 3G

The third generation, 3G, was introduced by NTT DoCoMo in Japan, in 2001. Although initially limited in scope, it was a leap forward. 3G used completely different radio frequencies from 2G, so it required different equipment to achieve the new high data transfer rates. Also, the enormous costs of additional spectrum licensing fees delayed the introduction of 3G in many countries. 3G data transfer rates are 384kbits/s to 2Mbits/s, so it allows for previously unavailable services like video calls, video conferencing, mobile TV, online gaming etc. These speeds are broadband equivalent, so the applications and capabilities are enhanced greatly. Along with these services, 3G provides greater security and privacy. As with 2G, minor evolution of the standards resulted in 3.5G and 3.75G. Again, these standards allowed for higher data transfer rates, exceeding 2Mbits/s, reaching about 14Mbits/s.
The next generation, 4G is all set to provide data transfer rates of 100Mbit/s to 1Gbit/s, which is mind boggling, to say the least. Such speeds are not even present in wired networks commercially.
3G has just been launched in India and is available on select mobile operators for select cities. But to access these services, a 3G compatible mobile phone is required.

New Apple iMac 2011 comes to India at lower prices

Apple seems to be gearing up to maximise their hold in India, which has potential buyers with keen interest in the latest Apple products and other smart gadgets. This can be seen after Apple recently launched iPad 2 much sooner in India, which was not usually the case before. Surprisingly, Apple has promptly launched the latest iMac in India that comes with updated hardware and is available at much lower pricing than its predecessor, thus making it pretty affordable for buyers in India.

The price of entry-level iMac i.e. 21.5-inch: 2.5GHz model has been slashed by Rs. 10k now costing Rs. 64,900 only, whereas the 27-inch: 2.7GHz iMac now costs Rs. 14k lesser than its former price. This makes it really a worthy product to buy because the new iMac pricing in India is quite equivalent to its US prices considering the taxes, custom duty, and shipping charges that adds up if we buy an imported unit from the US.
The update iMac 2011 is now up on Apple India site along with its official prices in India.

Best Free Data Recovery Software

In our day to day life, sometimes it happens that we accidently delete required files and folders. And after deleting, we realize that we need to recover those files. Not only this, even the system crash or hard drive crash leads us to data loss. If, you realize quickly, then it is good enough, as there are utilities, which help in recovering deleted files. However, the later you think of recovering, the chances are less

MiniTool Power Data Recovery

MiniTool Power Data Recovery is very powerful data recovery tool, which not only helps you recover deleted files, but also recovers data from damaged, reformatted hard drive as well. It also recovers data from hard disk, RAID device, CD, DVD disks, memory card, memory sticks and flash drives.
The utility comes with five data recovery modules namely Undelete Recovery, Damaged Partition Recovery, Lost Partition Recovery, Digital Media Recovery and CD/DVD Recovery.  Each of these modules operates differently pertaining to the loss type.
MiniTool Power Data Recovery runs well on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 ( 32 and 64 bit).

TestDisk

It is a powerful open source recovery software. Test Disk can effectively Fix partition table, recover deleted partition, Recover FAT32 boot sector from its backup, Rebuild FAT12/FAT16/FAT32 boot sector, Fix FAT tables, Rebuild NTFS boot sector, Recover NTFS boot sector from its backup, Fix MFT using MFT mirror, Locate ext2/ext3/ext4, Backup SuperBlock, Undelete files from FAT, NTFS and ext2 filesystem, Copy files from deleted FAT, NTFS and ext2/ext3/ext4 partitions.
TestDisk can run under DOS, Windows (XP, 2003, Vista, 2008, Windows 7 (x86 & x64)), Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, SunOS and MAcOS X.
The utility is basically recommended for expert and experienced users.

PhotoRec

PhoroRec is again free open source software, which helps in recovering lost files including video, documents, archives from hard disks, CD- ROMs and photos from digital camera memory. The utility  is very powerful and works even if media`s file system has been severely damaged or reformatted.
Just like TestDisk, PhotoRec also runs in DOS, Windows (XP, 2003, Vista, 2008, Windows 7 (x86 & x64)), Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, SunOS and MAcOS X.

PC Inspector

It is yet another recovery software, which supports recovery of data from FAT 12/16/32 and NTFS file sytems. It can find partitions automatically, even if the boot sector or FAT has been erased or damaged. It recovers files with the original time and date stamp. However, it is not as fast as others. While testing,  it recovered around 500MB in 10 minutes.

Glary Undelete

Glary Undelete provides a good recovery solution for FAT and NTFS file systems. It can bring back files emptied from the Recycle Bin, in a DOS window, from Windows Explorer with the SHIFT key held down. It can recover files that have been deleted by bugs, crashes and viruses. The utility also supports all Windows file systems for hard and floppy drives including FAT12/16/32, NTFS/NTFS5 and image recovery from CompactFlash, SmartMedia, MultiMedia and Secure Digital cards.

The above five utilities stood best for me. I would, however recommend MiniTool Power Recovery Tool.
